The Author’s Table Dinner

The Author’s Table Dinners are a terrific way for a limited number of people to get up close and personal with an author. This is an opportunity to share a great meal with your favorite author; talk about their work in a more intimate setting;  get reserved seating at the event; and to get your book signed ahead of time.  Price for dinner is $40 and includes the reading and reserved seating at the event. Dinner is available for all authors this season! For more information, please call Anne Touvell at Thurber House, 614-464-1032 ext. 10.

Thurber House Announces the Fall 2010 Adult Writing Workshops!

August 10, 2010

September isn’t just back to school for the kids!  Take advantage of those Back-To-School sales and get your notebooks and pens for the Thurber House Fall Adult Writing Workshops! We have two great workshops starting Monday, September 13!

From Page to Stage

New or aspiring writers will learn how to get over the hurdles of beginning the process of going from idea to story to script. Whether what you want to write is all about plot or all about character, or a great combination of both, moving from idea to page to stage is an opportunity to discover your own voice and move it to ‘center stage.’ Class limited to 20.

Instructor: Yolonda Sanders is a published author and playwright whose works have been featured nationally. She is the founder and CEO of Yo Productions, a theatrical entertainment and literary service company.

Introduction to Nonfiction Writing

How to write a variety of nonfiction including magazine articles, books, memoir, corporate communication, Web projects, ghostwriting, speeches, and more. From getting started to how to edit and proofread, to building your brand and interviewing tips and techniques, this class is a basic overview of the many different and interesting forms of nonfiction writing. Class limited to 20.

Instructor: Gretchen Hirsch is the published author of numerous nonfiction books in a variety of categories. She is the president of the Stevens/St. John Company where she provides communications project management; ‘chief surgeon’ at Midwest Book Doctors; and senior writer for Flyin’ West Marketing in San Francisco.

Classes begin Monday, September 13 and run for six consecutive Mondays from 6–8 p.m., until October 18.  All classes are held at Thurber Center 91 Jefferson Avenue, next door to Thurber House. Parking is free on Jefferson Avenue after 6 p.m.

Class size is limited to ensure individual attention so enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The deadline for registration is Tuesday, September 7. For more information, including price and a downloadable registration form, visit www.thurberhouse.org.

Don’t Miss The Last 2010 Summer Literary Picnic with Sharon Davies!

August 4, 2010

“First-rate history. Detailed yet fast-paced… Rising Road deserves a wide audience.”

Columbus Dispatch

Come to Thurber House on Wednesday, August 11, for the final 2010 Summer Literary Picnic of the season. Take a trip through history on the 89th anniversary of Father Coyle’s murder, as Sharon Davies tells a tale of the 1920s Jim Crow Era South, where not only the color of your skin, but also the church you attended, could be scrutinized and put you in harm’s way.

Rising Road: A True Tale of Love, Race, and Religion in America describes the heinous murder, and subsequent trial, of Father James Coyle, a Catholic priest in Birmingham, Alabama. On August 11, 1921, Methodist minister Edwin Stevenson shot and murdered Coyle, in front of many witnesses, in broad daylight.  Stevenson was motivated to the murder when he discovered his white daughter Ruth had been married by Coyle to Pedro Gussman, a Puerto Rican. During the trial Stevenson pleaded for temporary insanity and his defense attorney was future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black.

Davies is the John C. Elam/Vorys Sater Designated Professor of Law at Ohio State University, and specializes in criminal law and procedure.

Dinner for the evening from Party Panache is a mild Buffalo chicken wrap with bleu cheese and celery, a tri-colored orzo salad, and decadent triple chocolate brownies for dessert. A vegetarian option is available and must be requested when dinner is ordered. Dinner must be ordered by 4:00 p.m. Monday, August 9th.

Don’t forget to bring your lawn chair, blanket, wine or other favorite beverage, and enjoy an evening of fun and friends. To order tickets, visit our website or call (614) 464-1032, ext 11.
